Mountains and mountain passes

This tour leads you to the highest mountain passes of the Alps. Start with the 48 hairpin bends to the top of the Passo Stelvio (2760 m), the third highest mountain pass of the Alps!

Pay attention: the street conditions are very bad in certain points. You will also meet some road works, but don't panic....you can pass them easily.

Passing through the Valle del Braulio in direction Bormio (1217 m), gives you the possibility to admire the breathtaking beauty of the landscape. The road on the South Tyrolean part is in better conditions than the tunnels...so be patient.

Once arrived in Bormio, turn left to the Passo di Gavia (2621 m), known for the particular rock scapes and the wonderful view to the valley.

After the mountain top, you will reach an unlighted tunnel with a dangerous right curve..here, you have to be very concentrated, because Italian tourists usually don't have any reflectors.

Be careful also in the descent to Ponte di Legno (1258 m): there is only a one way street - not recommended for people, who suffer from vertigo. The way from Ponte di Legno to Indúdine is very simple, but don't miss the indication to Monno (1066 m); you have to cross this little village, if you want to reach Passo di Mortirolo (1896 m) - named also „Murtaròl“. Enjoy the wonderful paved road through the forest.
If you stay on the left side, you will have the possibility to rest, while you descent and discover the beauty of the Valtellina!

If you decide to continue in direction Trivigno, you will descent until S. Pietro or Passo di Aprica (1113 m). Take the paved road through the Valtellina to Tresenda. Turn left in direction Tirano / Bormio.

In Mazzo di Valtellina (550 m), you can cross the Passo di Mortirolo from the other side - but not until the mountain top; once you reach the last hairpin bend, go ahead to Grosio. Don't take the express way to Bormio, because otherwise you will have to cross many tunnels. We suggest you to follow the street to Grosio and discover the unique nature of the Valtellina.

From Bormio, ride up again to the Passo Stelvio - here, you will have the possibility to rest or to continue through the Giogo di S. Maria (2500 m) to the Münstertal. Return to Sluderno.

Alternatives:

From Tirano, you can easily reach the Val Poschiavo; follow the road to Passo Bernina and Forcola di Livigno. Tipp: the gasoline is very cheap here.

From Livigno, you can take the Passo d'Eira and the Passo di Foscagno in direction Bormio, ride up the Passo Stelvio to Sluderno.
You can also decide to cross the Lago di Gallo, and arrive to a toll tunnel to Switzerland. Cross the Passo del Forno to Sluderno.
